The Book That Shook the Nation
When The Lost Boys of Bird Island was launched in August 2018, it was marketed as a shocking non-fiction exposé. Yet beneath the sensationalism lay a fatal flaw: the book was built on lies.
Enter Johan Victor: The Maverick Attorney
For the former minister of Finance, Barend du Plessis, suing Naspers seemed impossible. The answer came in the form of Johan Victor, a Cape Town attorney renowned for his courage and refusal to bow to corporate arrogance. Victor’s open letter to Naspers chairman Koos Bekker was a masterstroke, compelling Media24 and Naspers to withdraw the book, apologise and pay a multi-million rand settlement in damages, without issuing a single court document.
The Collapse of a Fabrication
The so-called witnesses and victims cited in the book were meticulously traced. Sworn affidavits revealed that conversations and events described by Minnie (the co-writer) were fabricated. By March 2020, the publishers retracted the book and issued an apology.

In April 2017, a storm began brewing in South Africa’s financial sector. More than two hundred banking clients united against major banks. At the centre stood Johan Victor, a corporate law activist and seasoned trial attorney. His forensic analysis revealed chilling possibilities: insider collusion and systemic failures in banking security. This collective action highlighted Johan Victor Attorneys & Litigators’s expertise in Financial Litigation and reinforced our reputation as Cape Town’s fearless, principled attorneys.

The Fallout
By May 2023, Russell was ejected by court order, resulting in damages of nearly R2 million and unpaid rent. Despite formal requests, Rawson has remained silent, highlighting their disregard for accountability.
